Hazel Hutchison - ‘All I See’
My practice considers ideas of illness, vulnerability and human fragility in a domestic context that relates to our collective experience of living through the Covid-19 Virus.
In 2019, I needed emergency surgery whilst abroad, which resulted in being confined indoors for a short period of time when returning home. In this work, my aim was to reframe this perspective of being limited to my domestic surroundings, to showcase a journey photographically from illness through to recovery. I deliberately chose to print on glass, a medium representing my physical and mental fragility, as well as emphasising a kind of confinement.
The title "All I See" has a deliberate double meaning. It suggests a dissatisfied, bored response to my restricted space. But it also implies a generous appreciation of the subtle details of objects and the surrounding environment that are often overlooked.
There is a depth and breadth to the everyday that is expressed, through the shadows in the work, the photographs within photographs.
