Katerina Kouzmitcheva - Pinkipsism
The colour pink rarely appears in nature, which may explain why the colour only entered the English language as a noun at the end of the 17th century. And yet, in 2018, scientists ‘discovered the oldest organic colour’, a bit of bright pink lodged in a rock over one billion years old.
Pink carries many meanings.
In Western cultures pink is assumed to represent femininity; in Japan, in relates more to men; in Switzerland the colour is used in jail cells, thought to be mentally stimulating and calming.
Pink is abundant, though for many years stayed in the shade. The double nature of its very existence is the starting point of my visual work. Has pink always been there? All my images are made without any artificial additions of pink in post-production. But was it there when photographed?
