Rose Day - 'By Light of the Remote'
My practice seeks to explore themes of primordial landscape, deep time and the eerie. Depicting ancient and isolated forms in land and sea, I often consider the permanence of memory through ecology. Fascinated by the traces of the living on familiar and distant land, ‘By Light of the Remote’ is an ongoing body of work which began here in Scotland.
Seeking to articulate a sense of solace and relief in mythical wilderness, this series is a response to the stones and waters that have existed long before us, and will continue to outlive us. In June of 2023, I embarked on a residency with SailBritain, exploring the Hebrides by sailing boat. The unique perspective of the sea has hugely influenced my practice and my understanding of the forever altering landscape. Other locations which have informed this body of work include the Isle of Lewis and St Kilda off the West Coast. These sites are significant in archiving memory and considering time beyond our perspective, in the eyes of the land. Alongside the geology of Scottish landscape and folklore has greatly influenced my practice and when thinking about our relationship with the land.
